Sling the Mesh
Sling the Mesh is a 2D animated film created for Kath Sansom, founder of the pro bono campaign group of the same name. The intention is to help raise awareness of one of the biggest health scandals of our time; the use of plastic mesh implants which are often used as a cheap quick fix to treat women's abdominal and pelvic floor issues. In this film our three protagonists, Gail, Cheryl and Martin, are based on real testimonies from the Sling the Mesh community. Their narrated stories are interwoven, morphing into each other in increasingly surreal representations of their emotional and physical pain. They recount the feeling of ‘rusty nails in (their) pelvis’, being dismissed by doctors, and the way mesh has caused UTIs and affected their relationships with loved ones. Sling the Mesh represents thousands of people and is campaigning for change and support for men and women injured by mesh surgery. The team were incredibly touched by Kath’s passion for the campaign, especially as she tearfully shared her concern for women in developing nations. The hope is that an animated film can transcend any language barriers.
